Federal member of parliament Bill Matthews (Lib., Random-Burin-St. George's) announced on Tuesday he will wind up his 25 year career in politics when the writ is dropped for the next federal election.Matthews was first elected in 1982 as a provincial Progressive Conservative. He moved to federal politics in 1997 and crossed the floor to sit as a Liberal under Jean Chretien.
Speculation will now mount to see who might try to replace him.
Among the names likely to surface: former provincial Liberal cabinet minister Kevin Aylward, who represented a provincial seat in the western end of the riding. Current Liberal member of the House of Assembly Judy Foote's name will also likely be tossed around. Her provincial district is in the eastern end of the riding.

Please tell me there are no rumours about Kelvin Parsons spoiled elitist brats running for the liberals.
That's a pretty good hard-on you have there for the Parsons Boys? I thought those emotions were reserved for neo-cons and not progressives, or is it humanists now? Don't worry, I'm sure Danny will be letting us know soon enough who is going to represent that riding.
Jay, are you from the PAB area? Just curious.
Also, is this the most geographically f*#ked up district in the country or what? Burgeo and PAB should be in the same riding as Stephenville and Corner Brook since thier econmy is interlinked. To see Gerry Byrne and Bill Matthews (Kris Parsons hehe) compete against each other, not to mention Marine Atlantic and Corner Brooks attempt to get a ferry service there, for federal dollars makes absolutely no sense to me.
Cheers,
Glenn
Indeed,
I am from the surrounding areas of PAB.
I know the Parson's tragedy, I mean family unfortunately.
