Greg Malone, actor, is working on a new book which is supposed to prove the Great Townie Anti-Confederate Fairytale once and for all, i,.e. that Confederation was a Great Conspiracy between Canada and Britain, part of which involved hoodwinking the poor dumb newfs
Wouldn’t this be classified as a re-make?

Ed,
Well, Newfoundlanders tend to pay attention to their history only when someone other than a historian writes it.
As Ernest Renan pointed out, getting history wrong is part of nationalism. Conspiracy theories give nationalists a false certitude that comforts them against the true uncertainties of history.
There are plenty of good histories of NL out there, if anyone cares to read non-fiction. The Newfoundland Historical Society recently published a "Short History" (Boulder Press), which is concise, readable, and affordable.
Newfoundland & Labrador Studies devoted a Special Issue to Confederation in 1998, which is now available online:

And there is a public forum scheduled for Thursday night:
"Terms of (dis)Union: Confederation 60 Years On"
Time: 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
Location: IIC-2001, Inco Innovation Centre
Description: An engaging discussion about Newfoundland and Labrador's political, economic and social situation 60 years after joining Canada. Panelists will begin with brief opening statements, followed by questions from the moderator, and then by questions from the audience.
DISCUSSANTS
Terry Bishop-Stirling, History
Christopher Dunn, Political Science
Jim Feehan, Economics
Russell Wangersky, The Telegram
Jeff Webb, History
MODERATOR
Doug Letto, CBC TV
Ed,
The date of the public forum at MUN is April 1st. I hope the conspiracy theory gets a good airing out.
Winston
As Ernest Renan pointed out, getting history wrong is part of nationalism.
And of totalitarianism.
An integral part, in fact.
I hope the conspiracy theory gets a good airing out.
Oh, it will.
Just like in 1999.
"It was a LAND GRAB!" (Applause.)
WJM,
Well, I guess applause counts as an airing out.
