Deputy premier Kathy Dunderdale turned up in Ottawa on Monday. As part of the usual courtesy, the Speaker of the House of Commons drew attention to her presence in the gallery of the Commons.
So what was she doing there?
There’s no news release on her trip.
No mention of it at all locally.
Given the manifest problems in the relations between the current administrations in Ottawa and St. John’s, this would be the perfect opportunity for such a senior minister to try and repair the relationship.
More to the immediate point, she could try to deal pragmatically with the changes to the federal budget that supposedly will cost the provincial government $400 million in the current fiscal year.
What was Dunderdale up to?

One possible explanation is that Dunds wanted to take advantage of the free transit service offered by the back-to-work buses.
She may be traveling under the pseudonym Marian Hillier, a good Newfoundland name. Here is an excerpt from the Ottawa Citzen's report on the possible Dunds sighting:
"Another passenger wrote to say that her bus, the No. 114, didn’t come to her stop at its appointed time of 8 a.m. In fact, Marian Hillier wrote, it never came at all. “It’s a good thing buses are free this week — doesn’t help much when they don’t show. First time back on the bus — I am not a happy camper.”

Alternatively, a more plausible explanation is that the Man in the Blue Line Cab's quest to alienate every last human in Ottawa has at last succeeded; his own staff snapped and locked him in his office, with only 2 dozen donuts to last him the entire day -- so DW had to send Dunds to break the door down.
