Quebec interested in lunatic megaproject

Around these parts it’s known as the Stunnel.

As in Stunned Tunnel.

It makes absolutely no economic sense but people like to talk about it.

And now, as CBC is reporting, the Government of Quebec is interested in the idea, but apparently at the behest of the Conservatives ruling Newfoundland and Labrador.

Talk about a place sorely lacking in new ideas.

Super-duper Mega UpdateThe Northern Pen two days ago -

The Pen can reveal Quebec’s minister for transport Norman MacMillan wrote to provincial counterpart Tom Hedderson on December 1 agreeing, in principle, to undergo a joint study into not only the 15km tunnel, but the completion of Route 138 on the Quebec side.

The letter proposes “conducting a large-scale socio-economic study to investigate the current status and the potential evolution of economic activity and demographics within the entire territory in question, and whether the existing transport infrastructure is adequate.”

There’s a Radio Canada report as well.

I don't see thing happening for many, many years.
The first prerequisite for this grandiose plan would be the completion of route 138 from the Natashquan River to Vieux-Fort (Old Fort).

The current construction program ($100M over 10 years) will barely scratch the surface (and doesn't even include a bridge over the Natashquan). And quite frankly, a bridge over the Saguenay river at Tadoussac would be a much better investment for the Quebec government.

No, it wouldn't. It doesn't open up any new transportation options that don't already exist. It would only shave a few minutes off an existing route.

The 138 is by far and away the better investment.

There are two bits to this, Claude. One is Route 138 which is in Quebec's interest to complete. Complete that connection to both ends and there you have it.

On the other side of the straits though, the crowd what is appointed to rule over us is wedded to this completely insane Stunnel concept. They have been for years. In 2009, Trev Taylor even went to Norway to study their tunneling methods. You'd have to be willfully blind to miss that point.

As a political prop this is the sort of foolishness they are likely going to use, next to the Muskrat Falls project to try and score some big political points.

this is a classic Smallwood kind of political play and we can only hope they don't continue down that lunatic road. It doesn't lead to Quebec; it leads to financial hell for ordinary people in this province.

Relax Ed...for the moment this concerns Quebec and their cheque book. Let them study all they want...let them fill their boots!

As the news report states this is about Quebec and their dime...not NL. Chill out for the moment before you go running off in all directions about Smallwood, Taylor et al

Sorry person pretending to be someone called Wm Murphy but the story is plain enough.

You are wrong.

Yet again.
