In 2005, it was a load of seemingly unending silliness about debris from a NASA booster rocket. That’s just one of a bunch of posts from April and May 2005, incidentally.
Now it’s this thing seen over portions of the south coast and the northeast coast.
Okay.
It isn’t a French missile launched from St. Pierre, apparently.
And it isn’t the maiden flight of a locally produced nuclear missile.
Odds are it is a bit of space junk or a meteorite burning up as it enters the atmosphere.
But why should that get in the way of a good yarn?

Whatever it is, it isn't re-entering debris or a meteor.
Not sure why you'd say that.
The red trail behind it is not consistent with any sort of exhaust from a rocket booster.
Check the Canaveral website and you'll see there was nothing launched. Even if there had been it wouldn't have been on a trajectory to take it over land any way.
The most likely explanation is re-entering space junk or a meteorite. And the space junk thing might not even work since NROAD has been known to warn of any re-entry where bits might wind up over land.
Any updates or further info on what that was??? Very curious ...

It's also not terribly consistent with meteor or re-entry debris trails, which are much higher altitude and don't usually exhibit the kind of fan-tail or parallax in that image. The colour can be accounted for by time of day (dusk, scattered red light), yet there's no incandesence like you'd expect from something entering the atmosphere.
I seem to remember something in the news some time ago about the French wanting to discuss this offshore area around St. Pierre Miquelon with the Canadian government again.
Is this an example of the French flexing their muscle within their own zone around the islands there in an attempt to bring Canadians back to the table over that arangement?
I'm with WJm on this one. it sure looks like a rocket trail to me too.
I think the French fired a shot across the Canadian diplomatic bow in order to have the offshore rights thing adressed. Only thing here is that the House isn't open so our Members of Parliament can ask the tough quesions on this one...

"St. Pierre Miquelon", "Newfoundland Labrador"... is there a conjunction shortage in Dannystan?

I'm not saying I think it looks like a rocket trail.
CP style for "St. Pierre and Miquelon" is actually St-Pierre-Miquelon.
-Not a meteorite because flame would be reversed as the rock plummeted towards the earth.
-Not a UFO (because surely to God aliens have something more advanced than our primitive jet propulsion).
-It must be the French!! (or Americans) testing a missile from a submarine.
Whatever, locals should be screaming 'bloody murder' for federal officials to come clean on what it was that you witnessed! Even Saskatchewanites want to know!!
Well if you want to know what it is and can tune your TV to NTV from St. John's, be there at 5:30 Pm Newfoundland time.
Your humble e-scribbler will be live explaining the whole thing.

Hopefully it will be more plausible than the PMO's explanation today!
Ok...
So, if it were a jet, then why is there a contrail leading up to the jet itself, so much so that there is no distance bewteen the jet and the start of the visible contrail?
Any jet i have seen has always had a considerable amount of footage between it and the start of the contrail...
Angle?
I dunno...
And it's not two separate trails blending into one, from the look of the photo. It's one...No jet crossing the Atlantic can cross on one unless it's military and escorted by a refueler...
Only other plausible would be a near earth asteroid...
Making for good fun then!
George that assumes that the picture is so good (of such high resolution) that you can actually see everything in it.
If you look up with the naked eye at jets streaming contrails there is actually a gap between the aircraft and the start of the contrail. You actually may not seee the a/c first as it may blend in visually with the surroundings.
And the contrails appear to blend together.
In this instance the a/c could be a mil a/c and hence be a darker colour.
Ultimately though, since there is absolutely NO evidence to support any other conclusion (the missile stuff is just silly no matter who is suggesting it) you have to look for plausible explanations.
