Cartoon U

cartoon5

Some vintage political cartoons turned up in a hunt through your humble e-scribbler’s parental archives. It’s a small collection of cartoons from the now defunct Daily News.

The cartoons all date from the mid-1970s so some of the characters may be unfamiliar to the young readers of these scribblers. The two characters in this one, though, should be well-known to most of you.

They are offered solely as a reminder of another age, not so very long ago.

Enjoy!

I worked at The Daily News (in the paste-up department) when Denis Murphy would bring his cartoons in. He was a great caricaturist. Thanks for making me feel all "vintage" and everything!

Glad you appreciate them, Geoff. I figured you would and few others might get it as well.

Dad was reluctant to let me have them but I pointed out that they were of great interest just as artifacts of another time, back when caricatures like this were the rage.

This one I liked because it was simple and elegant yet had some real zing to its message.

The one that will be posted tonight at the same time (7:30 PM) has some currency in it which readers might find amusing. The next few all have characters and topics they'll recognise. I'll try to do one a night for five nights at 7:30.

And for those who are wondering, the SSP hasn't vanished. It is a 159 page document that requires time to scan and then time to edit to correct the scanning errors. It all takes time and time is in short supply these days.
