The Telegram editorial board stands resolutely in favour of political indolence.
So, when you think glumly about the lameness of local politics, and about how a poorly challenged majority seems to be coasting along on autopilot — just imagine how much worse it could be.
And be thankful.
Seldom does one see an editorial board in a supposedly health democracy lauding ignorance and apathy with such unbridled enthusiasm.
For those who don’t follow the link, incidentally, the Telly was not comparing the state of affairs in Newfoundland and Labrador with North Korea or, for that matter, any other autocracy, petty despotism or kingdom on the planet.

"standing resolutely in favour of"?
"lauding" with "unbridled enthusiasm"?
How does that come from saying things could be worse?
It is the matter of what the indolence is compared unfavourably with: a thriving democracy in which there are strongly held disagreements.
One may not like the way the debate goes - democracy is messy, after all - but to suggest that the wretched state of our local public affairs is better is to display a most cavalier attitude to democracy.
To suggest that our slovenly mess is better that a place where open debate does take place and where free speech is encouraged - not merely tolerated or hoped for - demonstrates the most appalling attitude I've seen thus far, apart from shouts from the most addled of the cultists.
